The Study and Curation of the Daily Behaviors of Residents in Northern Song Dynasty Luoyang from the Perspective of Everyday Urbanism
08/2024 | Open-ended and Research Oriented Planning
In August 2024, I conducted an open research design in the field of Digital Humanities. I explored the garden layout, urban landscape, and social life of people in Luoyang during the Northern Song Dynasty based on the ancient Chinese text "Records of Famous Gardens in Luoyang" and historical maps. Then, by analyzing modern social media travelogues, I summarized the urban landscape and social life of contemporary people, and compared them with Northern Song’s to discover the evolution and changes in the city's form and lifestyle of Luoyang, revealing the "changes and constants". During the process, I used Python and NLP methods to preprocess, clean, and analyze the text of "Records of Famous Gardens in Luoyang", 4 books, 35 poems, and 1137 modern social media travelogues. At the same time, by comparing the geographical images of ancient and modern Luoyang, I identified locations that have been preserved and those that have been destroyed. Through analysis, we obtained the "keywords" of ancient and modern Luoyang, thereby giving the accurate "Impression of Luoyang". Eventually, I designed a 0.22 square kilometer urban exhibition area within the city of Luoyang to exhibit the traditional culture and lifestyle of ancient times, aiding in the inheritance of traditional culture.
Decomposing Light Pollution in Xichong International Dark Sky Community Using Encircled Aerial Photos
03/2023 | iLLab | Research intern
In May 2023, I was deeply involved in the research on the current conditionof light pollution in Xichong, Shenzhen, conducted by the iLLab. As the first "International Dark Sky Community" in China, Xichong aims to reduce light pollution and protect the dark night ecological environment of the region. We hoped to decompose the current condition of light pollution in the Xichong Dark Sky Community through our research and explore the impact of various artificial light sources on sky brightness, thereby guiding the future construction of the dark sky community. During the two-day research process, from 7 PM at sunset to 5 AM at sunrise, I obtained community aerial photography data every half hour using drones and performed 3D map reconstruction in SketchUp to determine the types, on-and-off times, and specific locations of light pollution sources. At the same time, we used a sky quality meter (SQM) and an imaging luminance meter to collect dark sky quality data every 5 minutes and converted it into luminance values (cd/m²). In the data analysis phase, I combined the two sets of data, using SPSS for linear regression and correlation analysis to assess the contribution of different artificial light pollution sources to sky brightness. In the study, I found that street lights contribute the most to light pollution, followed by decorative lights, residential lights, and commercial sign lights. We then collaborated with the Shenzhen Observatory to further modify the lighting in the Xichong Dark Sky Community and provided guidance for future construction. Ultimately, I participated in the 14th Asia Lighting Conference in Tokyo, Japan.
Remote Sensing Image Analysis of Land Use Changes in Shenzhen
11/2023 | Independent research
In November 2023, I conducted a research on Shenzhen's remote sensing imagery and street views. By analyzing remote sensing imagery of Shenzhen from 2001 to 2011, combined with the development history and past urban planning of Shenzhen, we summarized the construction model and characteristics of the city. First, I used ENVI to obtain and process Shenzhen's LANDSAT-5 satellite remote sensing imagery, performing radiometric calibration, atmospheric correction, and enhancement. Subsequently, I use the maximum likelihood method to interpret the images and distinguish land use types in ArcGIS. Then, in Python, the discriminability of the remote sensing image training set was calculated, and the interpretation results were tested with a confusion matrix to optimize the classification model, thereby obtaining better interpretation results. Through the analysis of remote sensing imagery, the study clearly reflected the urbanization and the early sea reclamation of Shenzhen, while highlighting the destruction of natural landscapes and the shift of the construction center from east to west. This will play a guiding role in the future construction of Shenzhen and the protection of coastal spaces.
Identification of Leisure Cycling Routes Based on Spatiotemporal Cycling Big Data of Shanghai
03/2023 | Independent research
In May 2023, I conducted a research on the spatio-temporal big data of cycling in Shanghai. We hoped to extract "leisure cycling trajectories" that are distinct from commuting trips by analyzing the origin-destination (OD) data and trajectory data of shared bicycles in Shanghai. First, I utilized Python to randomly scrape 100,000 shared bicycle usage data and cleaned out anomalous data, resulting in 11,681 records. Subsequently, based on historical data and known cycling patterns, typical characteristics of commuting and leisure cycling were identified. Cluster analysis methods were then employed to classify the cycling data, and model parameters were continuously optimized to improve the accuracy of the screening. Ultimately, 920 "leisure cycling trajectories" were successfully filtered out. This study provides a reference for the diverse usage scenarios of shared bicycles and can guide relevant government departments and enterprises to collaborate in promoting "shared bicycle leisure tourism special lines" . Other cities can also draw on this research to apply it to urban micro-renewal.
The Policy Tool Effect of Natural Resources as Development Factors: A Text Analysis Based on the Current Government Land and Sea Use Policy
11/2022 | SCOPE | Research intern
In November 2022, I followed my academic mentor and participated in a policy study on China's territorial spatial planning. Through a textual analysis of 56 policy documents from the Chinese government regarding the protection of project land and sea use elements, I concluded policy tools and value changes from spatial capitalization to capital spatialization. The aim was to propose policy recommendations for the planning and policy design of natural resources as development factors. In the study, I used Python to perform semantic segmentation on policy texts, thereby summarizing three types of tools: "quantitative, price-based, and procedural," and provided specific application scenarios. At the same time, by analyzing the changes in China's money supply (M1) and quasi-money (M2) from 1988 to 2021, as well as the net reduction of arable land area and the increase of new construction land area from 2001 to 2017, I elaborated on the transformation of China's natural resource elements, primarily land, from "capital's spatialization (i.e., capital investment in real estate and other spaces) to the spatialization of capital (i.e., land as capital for trading)." This revealed the asset effect of natural resources as development factors. The study calls for the use of more advanced technical means and policy guarantees to improve the effectiveness of natural resource regulation and to help China's territorial spatial planning reform achieve high-quality development. Finally, I participated in the Second National Youth Forum on Territorial Spatial Planning of the China Society of Natural Resources.
"Good Wine Fears No Deep Alley" - Constructing a Restaurant Accessibility Analysis and Rating System for Chengdu
06/2022 | Independent research
In June 2022, I conducted a research on the spatial distribution of urban restaurants. This study aims to provide further guidance for urban planning and to grasp the industrial location layout. In China, there is an old saying, "Good wine fears no deep alley": these restaurants are located in remote places, but their delicious food is well-received and highly praised both online and offline. However, there are also some restaurants that, despite offering excellent cuisine, struggle due to their remote locations. In contrast, some popular restaurants with poor reviews but strategically located in accessible areas are always bustling with customers—the relationship between accessibility and restaurant reviews is worth in-depth study. Therefore, I used Python to scrape 87,741 restaurant rating data from Chengdu city and analyzed the data using the coefficient of variation method to establish a rating standard. At the same time, I applied the geopy and osmnx libraries in Python to construct a geographical network dataset to calculate walking times, and under the guidance of spatial syntax theory, obtained a dataset of restaurant accessibility. Finally, using the chi-square test method, I examined the correlation between the review data and accessibility data, studying and analyzing the phenomenon of "Good wine fears no deep alley" in the catering industry. By analyzing the geographical distribution and rating characteristics of restaurants, the study summarized the features of restaurants that embody the "Good wine fears no deep alley" concept, guiding the layout of the urban catering industry.

Chemland - VR Chemistry Lab
As a student from a major city like Chengdu, Sichuan, I'm the luck one who has access to better educational resources. In high school, we have professional chemistry laboratories that provide us with many opportunities to conduct chemistry experiments. However, this is not the case in remote areas. Many schools in remote mountainous regions do not have the conditions to equip professional laboratory facilities, which not only deprives students of the opportunity to learn chemistry through hands-on practice but also causes them to lose points in the experimental operation assessment of the chemistry subject in the college entrance examination, ultimately missing out on good universities. I am eager to do something to improve the situation for students in remote mountainous areas. With this dream in mind, I, along with my team members, developed the "Chemland — VR Chemistry Lab." We use Unity 3D + Leap Motion SDK to achieve motion capture of user gestures and combine it with HTC Vive VR to provide a virtual reality experience. Through virtual reality technology (VR), we have constructed a highly realistic chemistry laboratory scenario, allowing students to perform real chemical experiment operations in a virtual environment. This not only avoids the risks and safety issues present in experiments but also alleviates the shortage of experimental teaching resources in remote mountainous areas. Ultimately, our project was successfully applied in remote areas of Southwest China, allowing children there to enjoy the fun of chemistry experiments.
Lung Easy-Portable lung function testing device
As an asthma patient, team member Zou Shengzhi found that there is a common problem of "no scientific feedback to evaluate the treatment effect" in the process of asthma treatment, which leads to many patients unwilling to seek medical treatment and insisting on treatment, suffering from the torment of asthma.
Therefore, the team developed the "Lung Easy - Portable Lung Function Tester" aimed at addressing the issues of lack of scientific feedback and medication guidance, inability to monitor continuously, hospital testing being laborious and costly in the treatment process of asthma patients.
Lung Easy is a small, low-cost lung function testing device designed for asthma patients. The product is based on the principle of FOT (respiratory oscillation), which enables portable detection of lung function, long-term data tracking, and medication guidance by miniaturizing large equipment and making professional equipment more suitable for home use.
We hope that in the near future, the cure rate for asthma will not only be 5.6%, but 100% for 339 million patients who can embrace a healthy life with us!
